The sketch dates from 2004, but I was recently in touch with the cellist friend who inspired it, so I decided to orchestrate the sketch out (roughly)! My conception for the whole concerto was scenes from The Remains of the Day, which I was reading at the time... Any feedback is most welcome! soundcloud.com/driscollmusick/great-view-sketch

Feedback? On 2 listenings I certainly couldn't tell that the orchestration was still in 'rough' form. I just wanted to hear where you would go... Is this the end of the 'scene' ? I felt that this scene was perhaps a 3rd or less - of how long it might be. Really beautiful. There is so much implied with this bit - and I do think it needs to be longer. C'mon John. Make it into a full blown movement. Us listeners (and also speaking for the ghosts of future listeners) are very excited at the thought of what you might do! Great work, here!

Yeah, it really was just a taste of what that movement would be--certainly needs a lot of fleshing out to become a concert work... I'd have to reread the book to figure out how the rest of it might go (or remember what I was imagining at the time). Thanks for listening!
