Very interesting, John. It was surprising to me - although Id heard Brahms' notes - the orchestral treatment is so different from a Brahmsian approach that it hit the ear as something completely new, and all its own. (Reminded me a bit of Thomas Newman). The glockenspiel and use of percussion, along with a more transparent - or less 'thick' sounding (the impression of less density ) arrangement - for me really disguised the breadcrumbs leading back to Brahms. The orchestration is so inventive - highlighting the episodic. Really keeps the ear engaged. My only quibble was that I felt that the glockenspiel was a bit overused. (As an aside, I have always loved this piece - especially the 1st movmt, and have had the good fortune of playing this with an ensemble). Wonderful work! ps. One thing that struck me was that when sections 'returned' - it seemed (a few times) that the orchestration followed a lot of the same path as before. I thought perhaps that there may be an opportunity to approach a returning section a bit more differently than the previous reference. I may be incorrect about this - but just the impression it made on me.

I actually had taken out a few glocks in recent passes, but I guess I need to take out some more... It's such a personal piece I was trying to give it a number of chamber-like textures in opposition to the tuttis, somewhat more akin to the style of the Mahler symphonies vs Brahms's own. I've always been a special fan of this piece... The repeats (and returns of very similar material) are sort of a tricky thing. For the most part, Brahms scored them the same, so I was thinking I should too? But maybe you're right that this is no longer a Brahms orchestral score, so needs something different. I do think I know how to address.

I guess that Brahms had less choice of orchestral options, so (I guess?) he had to score it the same Glad my comments could be helpful. (Thankful for the unusually cool respite from the heat!)
