Hey Guys. I've had the good fortune of the "Sirius" quartet to record and release my string quartet - distributed by Naxos. I went to the recording session in Sept., and have now just received the master. Im really happy how it came out. (Im not able at this time to post it, though). The real kicker for me is that it will be performed 10-24-20 at Carnegie Hall - Weill Recital Hall. I can't help but recall my grandfather (who started me on piano) telling me I'd be playing Carnegie hall by the time I was 12. Something any grandfather would say to an enthusiastic learner, I'm sure. (I had started early, age 6). He died when I was 11... (so I guess he would have missed it anywho) It was observing him composing that got me putting the pencil to manuscript... I realize that this site seems to have little activity, but I wanted to share this on my favorite composer's site. Cheers!

Definitely let us know when the recording is out... Four decades late is better than never. We composers are like the finest wines and take a lot of time to mature properly (or at least that's what I keep telling myself...)

Thanks, John! Yes I'll be going! They are now finishing up the artwork (looks really good) and should be released in a few months.. It will be a the second of a series - 'Playing on the Edge' - (modern works)... The first release got great reviews. Fine wine? I suppose we should be getting better all the time - at least with the craft part... but that 'fine wine' characterization is a bit too close (for comfort) to what I've heard - 'Oh, a late bloomer'.... What? you must be joking! (I know they mean well) As you well know, John, (some) recognition - which is wonderful - is not the measure of intrinsic worth.... I just keep slugging away, who knows about the rest...

Slugging away is all you can do! I don't know how well you know NYC, but let me know if you are looking for any recs (I don't live there anymore but did until a few years ago and visit frequently)
Congrats again on it all. I don't buy CDs anymore, but would be happy to once it's out!
What about publication of the score?

Thank you! I've been to NY once, for a day.... Not sure how long my stay, but I want to go to the Guggenheim. I'd be interested in your suggestions. I don't buy CDs anymore either.. Thanks!
Im publishing it on my website, but I may seek out a publisher for wider access.

This is incredible news - double well done! I've had a vague idea of approaching classical labels like Naxos but no idea where to start, how did your opportunity come about? I'm not trying to ride your coat tails, although clearly I should Just genuinely interested in the alchemical nature of distribution and publishing. And a performance at Carnegie hall . . . the biggest of congratulations!

Thanks Dave! I responded to a call for new scores for string quartet from the Parma label. They liked it. They have a connection w Naxos, and have had 12 reviews over the last year by Gramophone of their releases, and said that my piece would be probably reviewed as well (we'll see). I retained all the rights, but there was some cost on my end, which was reasonable, considering.. Luckily, they were also nominated for a grammy in 2020.

It's a mad world, because I've started (emailed last night and surprisingly got a reply a few hours before reading your post) the first stage of that exact process with Parma and was wondering if it was worth the outlay, though I still have to chat with them. In my case it's orchestral and for a piece I already have a recording of, so paying a decent amount for a second recording is something I'd need to be confident would bring good returns career-wise; contacts, performance, reputation etc. If I had no recording of the piece I wouldn't hesitate, since you get published and distributed and a recording. The fact that it's clearly worked for you is great news in addition to it being great news anyway. Anyway, thanks for clarifying - it's a small world for composers sometimes. Parma certainly seem to produce quality recordings and have their own contracted players and ensembles, I think? Looking forward to hearing it!

Wow, funky timing! The process has been very smooth, and professional . Very responsive to my (editing) concerns. Carnegie is the cherry, and along w everything else, making it a worthy investment! Thanks, Dave!
