Really a great choice for orchestration! One really feels that the quintet wants to be bigger - and more varied timbres. I love what you did with it. I can also hear some of Brahms tendencies w regard to orchestration - especially w the treatment of the strings. Loved your use of the brass. The triangle (hight cymbal ?) very effective as well. Wonderful, John! As I recall, Brahms didn't write his 1st symphony until he was 50 or some such - (Beethoven's shadow?) - and I'm guess that this chamber work came before that. Your arrangement would be a most welcome addition, and should be performed. Heck, he only wrote 4 symphonies, (and I don't count the Haydn variations worthy, although many seem to enjoy that too).

Thanks, G. I do think the whole quartet could be made into a fine symphony, though at the moment I need a break from Herr Brahms. I was using this movement to fine tune my orchestral template and workflow (mic, instument positions, mixing and mastering). You think it sounds "better"/more realistic than previous mockups I've done?

Just listened again. Wow, just fantastic! Very very realistic sounding. Dynamic. Feels alive! (also the subtle rits handled perfectly). My only quibble, was that in just a few staccato spots, the flutes seemed 'too close'? I dunno, probably just me.

No.. that works for me. But at 0:44 the staccato - (and where that same spot comes again) - is that a Gb 1 1/2 above middle C? At that pitch, it seems it would sound so present. otoh I like the sound of it, giving a punch to the rhythm. I am uncertain if my criticism holds any weight, though. I would invite others to chime in on this.

It certainly seems to be the case. 'Requiem for a composer's site' ? Of the other 3 sites I'm aware of, 2 are ghost towns, the other, not so alluring, though tempting at times.. Shame. Perhaps the others saw this more as a halfway house

Perhaps the others saw this more as a halfway house I feel partly to blame. I was AWOL for quite a while last year... I'll just assume it's because everyone is too busy writing the great Anglosphere symphony!
