My Russian edition just arrived in the mail... It's been so long I can't remember what prompted me to order it! Anyone know the composer/work? gx, you might want to check it out--it makes me think of your project a bit

Hey, John. I never heard of Kancheli, but I see the similarity, especially in his simple approach (though he does use more pastels than I would care to:) He just passed a month ago, (b. 1935, Georgian) I guess some of these themes made it into film and theater. Considered 'modern', (probably do to a certain minimalism) it is curious about his 'defiant' romantic bend, - a little bit - in that way - like Piazzolla. Part is retro (Gregorian) in another way. Curious. Thanks for mentioning him. Here his a link to several of his short piano pieces for those who may be curious: www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWuWiPRmSlQJohn, if you like playing this stuff, Im aware that another (better:) collection of easy piano pieces will be available soon

I'm not sure what prompted the Kancheli purchase because I am not super in love with the music (for the reasons you enumerate) But yes, I look forward to purchasing this mysterious long-promised piano collection...

Too long promised, I can assure you This morning, thinking about paired down comp. style, I remembered an orchestral piece that was playing on the radio - in the wee hours - a program devoted to modern music - by Sylvestrov. His harmonic sense stood out - (not so modern) - but thought to take note. I remember his cadences were fake - as if falling (overlapping) with another idea already in progress. For lack of a better description, it seemed to be always in transition. So, this morning I thought I check if he had any piano pieces - and I see he wrote some Bagatelles. These certainly fall under the category of this thread, and are interesting, but I was quite moved by that orchestral piece - I heard over a decade ago. I don't know the name of that piece however. You might be interested to check him out though, if you haven't heard of him. Here's the Bagatelles: www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vdn1gzvXPvkI'm not crazy about the sound of the piano on this recording.
