I've heard it before and emerged in my head yesterday - I have no information on composer, usage, date. I feel like the title has some reference to gladiators or romans. Or shakespeare. I'm stuck. I made and attached a rough mockup of the theme with harmony as far as I recall it. I think it's a well-known piece so hopefully someone recognises it! Attachments:whatisthispiece.mp3 (592.77 KB)

It made me think of Sinatra's "My Way" but that doesn't seem like a match for your description!

It made me think of Sinatra's "My Way" but that doesn't seem like a match for your description! It's also near-identical, chord-wise, to the verse of "Can't Take My Eyes Off You" by Valli and the Four Seasons! Pretty common progression, I've used it myself years ago. But the power of the classical progenitor is amazing, except I can't find it.

Used as the theme tune for The Onedin Line too - probably before that fella with the excellent hairs time...his memory is sound though.

I was a semitone sharp. That's worse than being out by a fifth! Thanks again Tim, it really is some amazing writing and good to have at my fingertips.
It's true I hadn't heard of the show Mike, but then Mozart is from the 1950s (I think) and I know him - he was great in Poldark.

Aram was on form in Spartacus....must've made a bit selling that tune to the telly people. And don't forget his other big hit (2nd link...cool vid)....Rattle that Sabre! www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vx7RWW36weswww.youtube.com/watch?v=mUQHGpxrz-8

That's one hell of a resource Tim, nice. Do you think it's legal?

It seems to be. You're also able to buy/rent from them, so I assume it's similar to any publishers site. They don't seem to be hiding anything. Here's the link to the home page. Scores

ScoresWow...some really cool modern music in there too, the likes of Helen Grime (Married to Huw Watkins, who played on my violin sonata). Great resource Tim, thanks.

You're coming through this week, Tim. I had a look for the score and couldn't find it. It's interesting/comforting to look at the score and see detail that almost disappears in recordings or performances, because that happens to me. I didn't notice things like the viola/cello pizzicato in the first recording I found.
