Although anyone else is welcome to help out.
So I've been using Logic 9 and OSX 10.8.5 (mountain lion) forever thanks to a bad upgrade experience that left me with a system so unstable logic crashed every time. But more and more software is becoming unusable on 10.8.5 as companies drop support, and it's time to change after I'm done with current work. Question is, what do you - Mike, or anyone else - use? Logic X and what OS? I'm looking for stability and apple somehow doesn't always produce software that works with itself. I'm thinking going to 10.9.5 (Mavericks) - google turns up much discussion on the subject but if you personally have a strong system it's a good start. I'm running a mid 2010 mac pro so that has some limitations in how far I can upgrade.
I haven't even had skype for two years. I'm a broken man.

I'm on El Capitan with LogicPro 10.3.1 at present but do need to upgrade. I've held back for a while now because I've found this very stable and I am in the middle of a big project. However, El Capitan has had a bumpy ride with Logic and mixed results with users. I can't vouch for Mavericks and your workstation Dave but last year, last year there where issues specifically with Sierra and High Sierra but things may have changed. Post a question on the logicPro forum, citing your specs and the best way to get current-ish, as many there will be or have been in your situation. Sorry I can't be any more specific, but this link may shed light and also links to the forum.. www.logicprohelp.com/small-warning-updating-macos-10-13-high-sierra/I highly recommend LogicProX though. It will take a few days to get used to the new layout, but it massively improves the workflow and the automation window is really cool.

Thanks for this btw - it's a massive question since people who use logic for different purposes will find different OS better. For me, sample stability is key so your usage is a good comparison.

I f***ed it, my fault for not researching. I knew that you could install Logic 9 on multiple machines as I just got an older macbook pro for composing somewhere other than the studio; I didn't know Logic X is regarded as a new programme entire instead of upgrade and costs another £200. Oh, Apple. I can upgrade OS at least and delay Logic, but it makes sense to do it all at once. *reaches grudgingly for wallet*

It'll be worth it once you get into it.

Thanks - I'll try to figure it out as much as possible, but I've got one - does it directly update LP9 and with user settings, plugins, presets? Or have to be reconfigured from scratch? That's a good question. I rebuilt after upgrading and created new prefs. Check this link, does this help? macprovideo.com/forums/audio/logic-pro/thread/4128-how-to-save-logic-preferencesI will be more helpful than a search for you at some stage....
