…..written in 1944 by vocalist Mel Torm'e and Bob Wells. Ironically, it was written in the middle of a blistering heat wave in the middle of the summer. done after a few shots, for proper setting soundcloud.com/user-568426488/holiday-retro

Nice Greg, such a lovely song. I bet you just sat and played that, right? I do that sort of thing this time of the year and am currently learning this arrangement...jeez...hands here hands there... linkThis is another classic, tinged with melancholic hope that makes it all the more moving for me link

Thanks Mike. Yes, it was a shoot from the hip/heart - (did you like the deceptive 'lead in'? But that 'sleigh bells' arrangement.. Thats a lot of work! What a great treatment - colorful and witty. Memorizing would make it easier, ('holy leaping lh, Batman!) .. (some guys have a built in feel (no look) for that - Willy the Lion comes to mind, cigar, notwithstanding! ..) And all those pages - (and w Xmas looming like the sword of Damocles) serious business indeed! Kudos! Last week, just arranging 'have yourself' for a student, got me all…misty. And, like you say, each year, evermore so. Xmas eve has our extended family for years, around the piano, singing the favorites.. My wife coddled together books for each, hitting the harmonies, and full emotion… sitting in the middle of all those voices never fails to unravel me..

Greg, I didn't say I'd be able to play it....... . At least the leaps in the stride are not over massive distances and the pdf came with fingering. Did you ever hear the anecdote about Oscar Peterson and Count Basie? They did a gig together, Basie on first, who played a lot of stride on Peterson's piano. That piano had a flap at the bottom that when open extends the range down a bit and Basie had it open. When Peterson followed he thought for consistency he would start off using stride but ended up hitting wrong notes because Basie forgot to close the flap, so his peripheral vision was screwed. Imagine that...listening to the great man fumbling like that!

Sounds great, both the playing and the audio - that must be a real piano, right? Beautifully deep and resonant.

Thanks, Dave! Yes, it is real.. a parlor grand - Baldwin. Hey Mike. With a master like Peterson, it must've have been a funny moment to watch... As you are probably aware, there were those competitions between musicians trying to out do the others taking the stage.. Though this one seems quite innocent, I'm reminded of Miles talking about giving some space to another trumpeter, by not going all out before the next one's turn… (can't remember who it was.) and that guys tried to burn Miles off the stage.. He talks about the next night, when he shows up again, where he decides to burn the MFer real good.
