A truly stupendous piece I recently reacquainted myself with... If you're not familiar with it, here it is with score (though not a super recording). This is Brahms for people who hate Brahms!

Interesting to re-visit.. Completed a year before completing his 1st symphony -- at age 46.. Heard it mentioned that the shadow of Beethoven -- kept him from writing it sooner.. however, he Did mess w it for 21 years before completing) Sometimes called the Werther Quartet after Goethe's 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' - one hears that cry of two note (sighing) motif.. though some say that the sighing motif was for Clara (Beethoven still has an appearance in that first contrapuntal episode..) Then I couldn't help but think Orff snatched that obvious (and powerful and catchy ) bit at 1'10". Sure made Orff's little jingle, a 'ticket to ride' --- (think of all the films!) The artful thief… Did he ever throw Johannes a bone? Really fun to listen to.. Thanks for posting… ps…speaking of 'snatching'… there is a part of the sym. 1- 4th mov. of Brahms that (I contend, though heard no mention from anyone else) lifted practically a whole development section from a late Mozart symphony - as I recall - even in the same key..

Yes, and the supposed bullet in the head at the very end. I wouldn't be surprised about the Mozart borrowing; Brahms did model a lot. The structure of the last movement (Rondo) of his 1st piano concerto is modeled directly from the last movement of the Beethoven 3rd piano concerto, to the measure! I do think sometimes the weight of history held him back. There's a certain Romantic ferocity to the piano quartet that I wish came out more in Brahms' music. For the symphonies, only the opening of the 1st and the last movement of the 4th quite reach that same level. The Requiem was early, but this passage, "Tod, wo ist dein Stachel?" ("Death, where is thy Sting?") always seemed ntoably ferocious (also c-minor!)...
