He must have a clock for a brain, such fun to watch. Anyone know if this is pretty standard range of skills and speed for a good percussionist, or the side effect of playing the same music for months or years?

If you see the dance suite performed by an orchestra, there are probably 2-3 players + tymp for this as well as the drum set parts. The pit orchestras in big productions limit the number of players, so guy's like this are specialists in being able to combine, set up and perform these types of productions. The good ones working Broadway are in high demand. The skills aren't unique, the ability to put them all together in rapid succession is.

I heard a story once about a pit cellist. He'd been playing a Broadway show for years. One night the lights went out in the pit in the middle of a performance. Of course he had the music committed to memory, the only problem was he wasn't used to playing without being able to read the newspaper.
