My name is Michael Canales
I am primarily an opera and vocal music composer, though I have also written symphonic works, chamber music etc. I am also a published composer of solo works for organ.
I pay the bills by working as a church organist and music director.
I am however primarily a classical guitarist.
I studied in the good (bad) old days wherein atonal expressionism was the dominant harmonic language expected by most university professors. I got my bachelor's in 1985 from Occidental College (never saw Barack Obama there once!!!) and received my Master's from cal State University Northridge. My master's thesis was my first opera, a one act atonal work called "Inside Out". I studied with the well known Cuban composer Aurelio de la Vega, who was like a second father to me...lovely man, fine composer.
I founded an opera company called Pasadena Lyric Opera and ran it for 7 seasons wherein I produced not only the usual Italian and French stuff but also two Wagner operas, Dutchman and Tannhauser. I also premiered my opera Color of Vengeance during that period (2001) Sadly the company suffered from financial woes after 9-11 and finally disbanded after the 2002 season.
Since then I pursued learning filming techniques by making a series of independent short videos. My long term during this period goal has been to develop film making techniques to the point hat I can produce high quality operatic films that can be released to the general public.
I look forward to getting to know you all and hearing your works.
