Just ran across his music. Messaien's last student. I love the tonal melodism in a modern context.

Listened to the first one. Never heard of Chen. Really beautiful, lush. Interesting mix of influences - though I do find it quite tonal. The performance was exceptional. Thanks for posting this!

You say "quite tonal" like you are disparaging a store-bought BBQ sauce!

Hahaha... certainly didn't mean to insult... (I just meant that it was more tonal than I expected - after the first few minutes which was ambiguous yet very tangible... i must admit, referring to a pentatonic for long passagework - Lark ascending , as well as william Walton (I do love his viola and violin concertos), with some Gershwin thrown in, and an American spiritual as well.. With strong French ref. as well... Just more retro than needed? (I know, I should talk - after all these retro pieces for piano Ive written) Maybe Im just overdone in that way.. My apologies:)

Ha!
This piece actually has a sad back story, as he wrote it in response to the death of his adult son. I think that might have led to a more simplified tonal approach. His other works don't seem quite so on the nose.
