Hey John and Boot. Thought I'd throw in my latest for this book, in the last chapter where the student is ready to take on a fugue. It's quite short (1'50") and there is a quickening to the emotional arc - (could have been longer) , but I just offer this for your amusement, as it is a trifle. I hope you guys are doing well.. soundcloud.com/progstudiespiano/07-ch7-fugue-in-d-major-f8

Is Boot still here? Or did you mean Fuguestate? Sounds good to me. One of the hardest things I think about writing pure fugues is getting the proportions right in relation to the fugue subject and this seems on point!

I think Im in a fuguestate. Always fleeing. Never catching up:) Thanks for giving it a whirl, John - and offering your thoughts. How are things going for you? So far, OK here. I haven't yet taken a financial hit, luckily, but wonder with the tenuous outside, how long that will last. Doing all the lessons, and some performing online.. which I feel I have adjusted to, mostly.

Yeah, holding in there... Luckily (unluckily?) my income is not music-dependent and hasn't really been affected by COVID.
Once again I changed my compositional workflow... I'm now using Dorico and NotePerformer, bypassing the DAW altogether. After a couple years chasing mockups and software libraries, I realized what I need to get down are finished scores. And NotePerformer is really quite impressive--not all the sounds are amazing, but the expressiveness and ability of the software to interpret written music are really top-notch.
Once again working on that opera, though right now that is about fleshing out/finalizing old sketches from Act 1 (some were quite rough). I needed a slight break this week, so I'm doing a mixing challenge on Facebook--one of Dave's live orchestral recordings!

Oh, very interesting.. I do have NP - but wasn't too happy with its rendering of a string quartet... but that is all I have used it for. With a bigger ensemble I have heard much better realizations on NP. So it is very encouraging to hear that it holds up for you in an impressive way - (as one who has explored software libraries). Yes I was wondering how your opera was coming along. Sounds like NP help things move along quicker. Mixing almost seems like a science - with so many factors to figure.. (I feel like a barbarian in that regard). Im impressed that you have developed such expertise. Im not on FaceBook, - (not crazy about that world) - but I'll probably bite the bullet, as requested from a promotional team... Id love to hear Dave's piece when the mix is complete.
ps. Im using Sibelius with NP. Do you find that Dorico is better suited to manipulate the rendering in NP?

I have found mixing actually to be more of an art than a science, although there is certainly a steep learning curve technologically. You need to learn what are all the various tools/techniques you can use to improve the sound. But once you do that, the question of when/where/how is almost entirely personal taste and your ear's ability to pick up nuances. As long as you think it sounds "better" than where you started, you're doing a decent job. it is certainly a different mindset than composing, more akin to conducting.
I've never really used Sibelius and I've never used NP with Finale. So I'm not sure if it's truly any different in Dorico... I am using NP 3, which I think was a significant step up from 2?

I don't know what the hell's up w/ Boot.
I dig this, gx. I want to swing it a bit, and give it the Bill Evans treatment. I might do a little chord chart on it and see what happens. Then again... I can't even finish my own stuff.
You guys sound good. We're just staying in the house and yard around here, except for grocery-runs. So far, so good. Of course, I've got a leg up on everyone. I've been practicing social-distancing all my life...

Hey, Boot. Glad to hear you're OK. Im glad you like it. Im a fan of Bill Evans and would be curious what you might do. (Ive been a happy hermit - when able - so that part - no big deal).
Thanks for the info, John. I have NP3 as well.
