Alright, since people are going through the motions of forum introductions, I might as well...
I'm a computer programmer by trade, and a composer (among various other things) when I'm not doing that. Started composing back in '91 after being inspired by Beethoven's 6th symphony. Mainly in the classical idiom, and completely self-taught. Can play guitar and piano (by ear), but only to a moderate level, enough to impress the masses, but laughable by professional standards. Never learned to sight-read (not to an acceptable level anyway), which is one of my biggest regrets. Started off writing mainly piano pieces, though my true aspirations are orchestral writing. But did not learn to actually do so until much later, and still very much in the learning process.
Currently deeply fascinated by fugue writing, and have been mainly writing piano fugues. But this phase will probably pass. I think. Or it may become part of my personal style to be applied to a wider variety of things than what the stereotypical textbook fugue would have one believe.
Being a crazy-nerd computer geek type, my current method of composition involves entering music in LilyPond syntax, a plain-text format, in a text editor. (And I like it that way.) Plain text is great for version control with Git, which lets me keep track of experimental branches of a piece easily, great for exploring different options in writing different passages, without ever worrying about losing previous changes or losing track of too many versions of the same file.
