I don’t know anything about the "music engraving tips" group, but I agree that "orchestration on line" is a good fun and informative Facebook group. My only concern is that you cannot really criticize constructively by pointing out lots of negative points that you may observe in a piece, as you usually get a message from the admin that this may not be the right group for you. The emphasis is on positive comments which are always welcome even if inside you feel that the work in question is rubbish. No, you must not say so cause you discourage young people seeking encouragement most of all. Well, I'm all for that, but at the same time, how can I help honestly someone if I am only supposed to caress their ears and nothing more?

how can I help honestly someone if I am only supposed to caress their ears and nothing more? Well, you can't. I tend to get a list of f***ups when posting things here for critique. The list of everything I DIDN'T f*** up would be much longer these days but what's the point of demanding to see it?

Yeah, you can't really give constructive criticism if you're not allowed to criticize! Of course, the flip side is that the criticism can (should) be with tact, not done in a demeaning or patronizing way. Yet one can't go to the extreme where no negative words are allowed at all.

Some people simply aren't equipped to take suggestion or criticism. Or might decide the person critiquing has no authority to do so. But if people hadn't nicely but firmly told me everything I was doing wrong, I'd be much worse! Seems weird that some people would prefer an echo chamber to improvement. Perhaps I won't click that link.

Re music engraving tips, Justin Tokke(sp?) the individual who runs the group is extremely knowledgeable regarding notation. He was/is with Carl Fischer Publishing and serves as an editor I believe.
He also has a series of videos on youtube addressing certain notation issues. Very informative.

I agree: a very informative group - and civil too (so far!)
