The following will work with most computers having a usb socket on them. AUDIO INTERFACE : something like this which includes DAW software to get you going. YES, if you can afford better, buy better. MONITOR SPEAKERS : nothing fancy as long as it has a pair of audio inputs to receive the audio outputs from the AUDIO INTERFACE. If you can afford better buy better. HEADPHONES or EAR BUDS : there will be a socket on the AUDIO INTERFACE where you can plug these in and not disturb the neighbours. KEYBOARD/CONTROLLER : something like this but if you can afford better, bigger, weighted keys etc etc buy better! (you just need another usb socket to plug it in). Simples!

There is an exception to the above. One can get away without investing in an interface. When I'm traveling or at our summer place, I successfully use just a small Samson Graphite midi keyboard plugged into an older HP laptop via USB. Monitoring is by laptop headphone output. This works just fine.
Ray's right, of course. You'll get better results with an interface, but since this is about 'minimum requirements', I thought I'd share my 'road' setup.

I'm going to risk Ray's slap for saying you don't even need a keyboard. Proviso: that's for composers that can't play keyboard (and such rare creatures can be seen, on moonless nights). If you can, you should probably have one.

I get along well enough. When I had my midi guitar - which was pretty much zero-latency - I thought it would redefine how I input music. All it did was require me to fix everything afterwards. Mouse is slower, but I can input exactly where and how I want and save time that way. You mean pipe organ latency due to the sheer mechanical delay between pressing a key and air flowing, valves opening etc? I'm going to risk Ray's slap for saying you don't even need a keyboard. Proviso: that's for composers that can't play keyboard (and such rare creatures can be seen, on moonless nights). If you can, you should probably have one. All us guitarist have had to bite the bullet on that one or put up with mouse and cursor. Midi guitars and high latency go hand in hand. Mind you, I've sat at some pipe organ consoles and wondered at ability of the experienced organist living with latency. These new fangled electronic things are just plain cheating

It was said on the assumption that by now Ray knows I'm a mouse-inputter. You're in fantastic company. I'm going to risk Ray's slap for saying you don't even need a keyboard. Your minimum isn't mine so we can agree to differ on this. It's not about agreeing or disagreeing. And neither is it a matter of 'your minimum' vs. 'my minimum'. It is simply a fact - at absolute minimum, an interface is not required. And, as Dave interjected, neither is a keyboard ( and this is all assuming that the 'beginner' prefers recording midi rather than audio.). Maybe you should have titled this thread, "Ray's Personal Minimum Hardware Requirements..... "
