It's a very interesting score. Good example of my "I may not want to write like this but I have a feeling I wouldn't be able to anyway" classification.

I have to admit, this isn't really my kind of music either, but I do like to steborrow these techniques to use in my own music.
The latest idea that's been brewing in my head is to have part of the orchestra carry the melodic component of a piece, whilst the other part uses techniques like these to add a background "atmospheric" component to the music. I've been seriously thinking about this for a tuba concerto that I've been sketching for a while now.

Be sure to post that concerto when it's finally finished. Would be great to hear what you create for such a (prejudice on my part I know) heavy handled instrument (although having known a faboulus tubaist an instrument with much more range and possibility then I could have imaginged had I not actually met said musician).

David Unger: Given my current lack of time, I don't foresee this concerto being finished anytime soon. So don't hold your breath for it. I have not gotten past the general sketch of movements and approximate sections in each; most of this will probably change once I start writing the actual notes. It was originally supposed to be a double bass concerto, but after much consideration I realized that a tuba would be a far better instrument to convey what I want. A double bass solo would impose so much restriction on the surrounding orchestration that I doubt I could pull it off successfully.

driscollmusick: yeah, somebody pointed it out to me in the shoutbox too, and I've made a note of it. I think I'll definitely buy a copy when I can. Thanks for the tip!

Seven pages to me says that there is not that much agreement. And all musicians would have to have read that book to play it the same way.
